In an editorial on August 30, the Israeli newspaper HAARETZ called on Israel to abrogate the 1979 peace treaty with Egypt "instead of waking up worrying what position the new regime in Egypt is going to take on the treaty." The editorial by Svi Bareil, said that Israelis are now concerned about the fate of the treaty which kept the peace between the two countries for 33 years "Israelis are waiting for the treaty to suddenly collapse," said the editorial, a translation of which appeared in Cairo's authoritative daily AL AHRAM on Aug. 31. The writer said that the treaty was first initialed by "one Egyptian dictator (Anwar Sadat) and passed on to another (Hosni Mubarak)." The resolution of this issue, the writer said, "is either for Israeli to take the initiative to dissolve the treaty or wait for the rise of another dictator Israel knows how to deal with." The historic 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel is under threat following five days of violent clashes near Eilat in the southern Sinai Peninsula in early August. The incident was the most serious border clash since the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak in February. Since then, Israelis have watched with alarm as the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists have made political gains in Egypt and as the interim military-led government has lost security control of the Sinai. The desert peninsula, a vast buffer zone between Israel and the Egyptian heartland since the 1979 pact and long neglected by Cairo, has become a hotbed of Islamist radicalism.
